Artist Statement

Photography and all of its components has proven to be a great experience for me. I have learned so much within the past year about the importance of rule of thirds, framing, lighting, dark room techniques, and more. Throughout the course, I have developed many photos: some that I am really proud of, and others I am not. Through it all however, I've learned some pretty cool skills, despite the not-so-great outcomes.

The majority of my photos consist of portraits as my subject matter. I like shooting emotion and candid moments, and have particularly enjoyed capturing the personalities of my brothers. From time to time I've struggled with creative composition ideas, especially with my limited choice of location on the weekends (as I did not always have a lot of time). I've also struggled technically, from accidentally rolling 5 pictures worth of film, to only having one type of film available for a shoot. One thing I have learned from those moments is how careful and methodical I must be about everything I do, in order to avoid any silly mistakes.

I have grown as an artist because I've learned to deal with situations that have sometimes been unexpected. From having the wrong film, to shooting on a less than ideal day, or needing to convince my brothers to be subjects in my shoot, I've learned to work past those obstacles and still create photos that are presentable. I plan on incorporating all of the technical skills I have learned in this class and applying them to any pictures I take in the future.
